The Downtown SSMID (Self-Supported Municipal Improvement District) in partnership with the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance are proud to announce the winners of the 2025 Race For The Space pitch competition. Presented by Farmers State Bank, this second annual gathering builds on existing support for entrepreneurship in our community by directly filling storefronts in Downtown Cedar Rapids.
For the 2025 pitch, nearly 20 applicants from a variety of industries applied to be vetted for consideration in advancing as a finalist. Four finalists were selected to advance and pitch. These included ThirdSpace Create, DKW Art Gallery, L’Catering Fare Boutique, and Downtown Dogs Canine Social Club. With 20-minute pitches, rapid fire questions from judges, and audience engagement, the entrepreneurial zest filled the air.
This year’s Race For Space judges were:
- Nick Glew, Vice President, Business Development & Commercial Lending, FSB
- Teresa Jensen, Business Banking Officer with Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust
- Liesl Siebert, Program Manager with the University of Northern Iowa Institute for Decision Making
- Surprise Guest Judge, Heather Armstrong, Owner Lucky’s on 16th
First place was awarded to Dr. Tiffany Carr of ThirdSpace Create, a new venture dedicated to providing a creative environment for community members and artists. As the top winner, Dr. Carr will receive a downtown storefront space along with business support resources, and $15,000 to bring her vision to life.
Second place went to Downtown Dogs Canine Social Club, founded by DawnLarie Michel, a boutique dog daycare and social hub where pet owners can enjoy amenities, and connect with fellow animal lovers located in downtown’s Kingston Village. Downtown Dogs Canine Social Club was awarded $10,000.
“Each of these finalists presented ideas that would strengthen downtown’s vibrancy and give our community new reasons to visit, shop, and explore,” said Caleb Knutson, Executive Director of the Downtown SSMID.
The first “Race for the Space” was held in 2022, and its success inspired the continuation of the program. The initiative remains a key part of downtown’s long-term vision to foster local entrepreneurship, activate vacant spaces, and enhance the overall visitor experience.
