Targeting completion in 2030, the 8th Ave Bridge p

Targeting completion in 2030, the 8th Ave Bridge project has received a substantial boost in funding. Dubbed the "𝘼𝙧𝙘 𝙤𝙛 𝙅𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚", this stunning structure will replace the existing bridge connecting Downtown to the western districts of Cedar Rapids. Earlier this year, a $56.4 million federal grant was awarded for its construction. This grant has since increased a further $6 million, or $62.4 million altogether.

The newly improved funding will accelerate the design process ahead of construction starting in 2027. The new bridge will be a full 15 feet higher above the Cedar River, allowing it to remain open should the city experience flood conditions. In short, it will add an attractive piece of architecture to the Downtown area while working to ensure the safety of its occupants.

He's here! Caleb has officially begun his role as the Downtown Executive Director. Welcome!

The Downtown SSMID is delighted to announce that Caleb Knutson has been hired as the Downtown Executive Director! He will be responsible for implementing the Downtown Vision Plan, which includes the attraction, retention and expansion of downtown businesses, and effective communication with downtown stakeholders.

A native of Des Moines, Knutson is a graduate of Iowa State University with a master's degree in Community and Regional Planning. With a diverse professional background that includes leadership positions in higher education, and city and governor appointed roles, Caleb has over a decade of experience leading diverse teams and successfully executing projects of varying scales. Knutson brings a nuanced understanding of what is optimal for business, stakeholders, and customers.

We are thrilled to have him on our team! Ahead of his first day on October 14, please wish him a warm welcome 😊

The market takes place during its usual times lot from 7:30 a.m. to noon, we hope to see you there!

Time for another Throwback Thursday! This time we’re looking at the Roosevelt Lofts, formerly the Roosevelt Hotel. At 132 feet tall, it remained one of the tallest buildings in Iowa until the mid 1900’s. These days, there are some significantly taller buildings downtown, but few as charming as the Roosevelt.

Join us THIS Saturday from 6:30-11pm for one of downtown's largest outdoor events. Reminders for the market:

☔️ Weather - this is a rain or shine market, so come prepared. (unless there is severe weather)

🛍️ BYOB - bring your own bag No pets, coolers, outside beverages, chairs or smoking

🍺 Only beverages from beverage tents or at participating bars and restaurants inside the venue can be consumed at Market After Dark

🪪 Attendees purchasing alcohol must present valid identification verifying age of 21 and over at an ID Tent, and will receive a wristband.

💵 Alcohol vendors on the street will accept both cash and card in separate lines, powered by ImOn!

🥃All purchases of alcohol will be served with a designated Market After Dark cup.

❌No outside beverages will be allowed inside the Market After Dark venue.

⏰ Open container ends promptly at 10:30 p.m.

👮‍♀️ Attendees removing alcohol from the Market After Dark venue may be subject to open container citation.

And remember, please drop your cups into the appropriate receptacles. See you Saturday! 😎 🍻
